We fell in love with Flaxley House at first sight. The house dates back to the early 1800's and has a rich local history. The Grade II listed property and cottage needed some attention and over a period of 5 years we empathetically restored the two properties and extended the cottage creating what we consider to be two beautiful properties, blending exquisite period features with a contemporary and practical living spaces. We added the paddock in 2020 which finally reunited the house and grounds as they were originally intended.
We are situated in the popular and pretty village setting of Walford in a unique part of Herefordshire. We have lived in the Ross area for over 30 years and absolutely adore the village which has a strong sense of community with a vibrant local bistro pub, a popular church dating back to Saxon times and a village hall providing welcoming communal areas which are regular local meeting places. We are part of a local residents group which have regular monthly events in the local pub, an ideal way to get to know everyone in a relaxed and friendly environment. We have a local vineyard producing award winning wines, a long farming history and a local infant and primary school that is currently rated outstanding.
For us, it is a great location on the edge of a royal and ancient forest and in a designated site of special scientific interest perfect for connecting with nature. The local walks, particularly up and around Coppet Hill, Bulls Hill and down the valley to Symonds Yat, are inspiring and exceptional with breath taking views. It is also a great way to meet the wide range of local wildlife including deer, kites, peregrine falcons and even an occasional wild boar!
The England/Wales border has a great heritage and history with legends and castles close by notably a personal favourite just across the river Wye at Goodrich dating back to the 11th century, Offa's Dyke and a rich Tudor history. Further afield there are the stunning Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) which reminds us of or home in the Lake District

The Cottage:
The detached stone cottage in the grounds of Flaxley House has been constructed from red sandstone, a richly coloured rock that is synonymous with the local area.
